In a publicized telephone call with his supporters yesterday Trump overruled an internal Trump campaign memo ordering his high profile supporters to stop talking about the Trump University case, and his racially charged commentary on Judge Curiel. Bloomberg reported that the email said “The best possible response is ‘the case will be tried in the courtroom in front of a jury—not in the media.'” Trump dismissed that saying “Take that order and throw it the hell out.” He added “Are there any other stupid letters that were sent to you folks? That’s one of the reasons I want to have this call, because you guys are getting sometimes stupid information from people that aren’t so smart.” To reiterate, this is Trump his own staffers “stupid” and “not so smart” trying to spin his openly racist remarks to some of his biggest Republican supporters, such as former Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, former Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown, and current Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi.
Near the end of the coversation, Bloomberg reported that instead they should retort with “The people asking the questions—those are the racists,” Trump suggested. “I would go at ’em…I’d let ’em have it.” Not a very strong or coherent response to his comments that are so clearly racist. It’s unclear how helpful this schoolyard policy of “No I’m not, more like you are” will be in a media that has turned very quickly on the presumptive Presidential nominee.
The media is not the only group turning on Trump for this most recent round of comments. In a surprising turn, Republican Senior Senator from South Carolina Lindsey Graham has essentially backed Hillary Clinton in the upcoming Presidential election. In the wake of the Donald Trump’s racially charged comments on Mexican and Muslim judges, Sen. Graham urged Trump supporters that “If anybody was looking for an off-ramp, this is probably it.” Sen. Graham didn’t back off, upping the ante by adding “This is the most un-American thing from a politician since Joe McCarthy” and most shockingly “There’ll come a time when the love of country will trump hatred of Hillary.”
