Donald Trump has interrupted Hillary Clinton many times in the three debates, often just loudly saying “Wrong!” into his mic while the Secretary was speaking. One of those times was when Hillary Clinton said Trump mocked a handicapped reporter.
CLINTON: So we know what he has said and what he’s done to women. But he also went after a disabled reporter, mocked and mimicked him on national television –
CLINTON: – He went after Mr. and Mrs. Khan, the parents of a young man who died serving our country, a Gold Star family, because of their religion.
A little background. Early on in Trump’s campaign he made the widely debunked assertion that Muslims in New Jersey were celebrating in the wake of September 11, 2001. Serge Kovaleski was the co-author on the origin of that urban legend, which appeared in the September 18, 2001 Washington Post. Kovaleski later walked the claim back, and denied ever saying that there were “thousands and thousands” as Trump claimed.
While discussing Trump’s mention of the 9/11 celebrations, as you can see in the video, Trump says “Now this poor guy, you’ve gotta see this guy,” before flopping around and moaning, and pointing his right wrist at a specific angle while mocking him, saying “Ahhhhh, I don’t know what I said!” Kovaleski has a genetic disease called arthrogryposis, which causes stiffness in his joints and has caused his right arm to point down in a specific way.
Let’s take a look at a comparison that a Twitter user put together.
Trump later denied mocking him as he denied knowing the reporter, saying “I have no idea who this reporter, Serge Kovaleski is, what he looks like or his level of intelligence. … Despite having one of the all-time great memories I certainly do not remember him.” Kovaleski covered Trump extensively throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the reporter saying that they were “on a first name basis” for years.
